The small Staffordshire village of Great Haywood lies on the River Trent about 4 miles from Rugeley. It is an important junction of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal and the Trent and Mersey Canal. Back in the mid-1800s it held its own race meeting, although the meeting of 1840 was not sufficiently well attended for the venture to be repeated the next year. The meeting was held on a flagged 3 ½ mile course in fields on the outskirts of the village on Monday 20th January 1840 and was won by The Forester. This appears to have been the only meeting staged in the village. |
